Week 56

This painting was very intimidating- because it is huge! After completing it, I had to stand back to really see it. To see the life and color, the depth and mystery burgeoning in these winter trees.

And then, I Ioved it.

When we began, I felt myself pulling back worried our series would become a collection of landscapes. In the last few pieces I saw the outcome and style different in my pre-planning than what we ended up doing. It’s hard to be growing while held back - to be held up and yet not hinder the other. Our vision for this series has not yet jelled, both artists wanting different things. I am desperate for us to get back into a rhythm and to have a clear vision between us.

We used oil pastels to draw contrast, hoping to speed up the process of an enormous drawing. It’s been ages since I’ve used them, but I love the feel of the oily color in my hand, of touching what I’m creating.

You could get lost here. The Water Forest is mysterious and ancient. The Spanish moss cascades from every branch, eerily hanging, waiting for a wind. The boat passes the wise cedars silently, holding an enchanted reverence that is only pierced by the massive wings of a great heron searching for a new roost.
