Week 77

Wet rocks, deep crevices. Soft mossy blankets over slick stones. Hanging vines and reckless tree trunks frame the waterfall as if trying to stem the flow of something they already know cannot be stopped.

This incredible waterfall was at the culmination of an hour’s hike though the dense forests in Tennessee. An hour may not seem much to those seasoned hikers, but when you are partially carrying or running after a 2.5 year old- it is a harrowing event. We are actually standing in a smaller part of the waterfall to get this image- after climbing the wet rocks through the main flow downstream. Both Laert and I are inspired and trying to take photos while tag teaming keeping our little monkey from launching herself into the swirling waters below. After the large group of tourists filtered in behind us beginning to obstruct our serene view and private moment, we sit down on the boulders to enjoy a picnic of highly recommended doughnuts from town.

Waterfalls are the place I always go to when I’m told to find a relaxing place in my mind. I always find myself imagining sitting beside some thunderous spray into a quiet pool. A place both cool and warm. Secluded and safe. Pure and good. The falls pound the wild thoughts from my brain and wash them downstream. I’m left with calm wonder and deep gratitude. A place like that is one to visit often.
