Week 79

On the hiking trails around Lake Ouachita, we trudged child in one hand (sometimes) and props draping from every other arm. The huge petticoat stubbornly billowed out around me as I tried to evade brambles and scramble over fallen limbs. It was the golden hour. We’d heard photographers talk of it lustily for it’s perfect lighting.

We set up this scene at the end of the photo shoot, noticing a forgotten inlet of water near the path back. The reflection from the water, the crystal droplets and the golden setting sun was a recipe for all the wonderful elements I love in a painting.

As we readied to paint, we discussed trying a very loose sketch painting feel for the background. Our under painting is very vibrant, quite different then our often used burnt umber which made the technique and color palette sort of backwards. The wrestle of something new was exciting.

I love the tranquility of this piece- but it is not a peacefulness that puts me to sleep, it is one that emboldens, gives vibrancy and life. It’s a fresh sip at a golden stream.
