12x36 | Oil on Panel

Week 38

After packing and unpacking 8 times in 2 months, a week at home is a special treat. No wonderful and looming plans. No delightful obligations but those to my small family. I am so full of wonder and gratitude.

Stepping into our studio was warm and familiar, the nest which we have built to fan our flames is serving its purpose. Laughter flowed with our conversation and the paint across our panel. I feel so at home.

Also, I love Venice. Have I ever mentioned? Each time I've been, I grow more connected- with ownership like it's somehow a part of me. In this painting, we go there again. Turning corners there is always a simple mystery to behold, simpler life, more vivid colors, a juxtaposition of tranquil water and a vivacious pulse of an ancient hot blooded city. The light makes gold reflected in the walls and water. Bold strokes reveal the multiple years of plastered walls. The silent water moves veiled passengers in their lives, each a separate sphere. Each window and door a shadow of the human presence behind.

Our little woke twice during this piece, sending one of us running inside to slay her dragons. This month marks the beginning of her lifelong journey in learning about fear and how to face it. I am grateful we get to guide her; I know that I'll only be a few steps ahead but it's enough. Tonight there was no fear, no hesitation. When alone for those few moments, the extra arm space was welcome but I missed his arms close and entangling. His energy, warmth and smile. Home is our togetherness in creating. Our brushes clinked and we said cheers!
