Week 39

The man and woman walking here seem to leave a trail of the trees they planted in their lifetime....the rooted trees grow up behind them as they walk onward. It is the legacy of the things cultivated in their lives together. When I think of this concept, I see my mom and dad, I feel my grandparents, others in my life who planted goodness, steadfastly watered it and continued walking together on their path. They did not obsess about what they were doing but simply were themselves, deep and true.

This is the first painting my dad has ever done. My mom (a seasoned artist), Laert and I, conspired to do something fun and new together before the rest of the family arrived. My dad had no idea we had set him up when we took him out to my moms studio. He dove right in. If I thought it was crowded with 2, 4 was a whole different story! Paint and smiles were everywhere! We listened to French cafe music and painted together. We are all amazed in setting down our brushes how in the same time it took to eat dinner that night, we created something to last. The feeling of closeness, creation and wonder binds us.

It isn't the only quickie done this week by my family- I got a text yesterday of my brother in Seattle painting with his girlfriend and my aunt and uncle having art night. I'm deeply grateful and amazed how multifaceted art works, how it moves us, inspires us- keeps us awake, pumped in an art high. It is my hope as I am healing and growing, this love and art we are planting is growing a legacy of beauty, joy and wonder. Legacy is formed in the small, tender steps.
