Week 65

Poking around my mother in law’s house, I saw several new paintings from SABKA that had been newly framed. The stacks of unframed and unseen paintings were finally being tackled. One by one these gorgeous hidden works were coming out of where they’d been laid after the long journey from overseas. I marveled at them. So many. So many still lined the baseboards.

The paint laid loosely over the panel, one beautiful scene after another. It was a treasure to see the strokes, evidence of the man we loved. They spoke of his thoughts, his heart of freedom and love for beauty. They spoke of the past, immortalizing the virgin beauty of his homeland and the stories within. I’m impressed seeing how much of his style we have gained. I never had the honor to be his direct student but seeing these, I know he has never left us.

As we paint our model, our niece with a cherub face and porcelain skin, I cherish those thoughts. The paint is an expression of us, it’s our unique finger print. And the moments we are collecting and immortalizing, tell the story of the freedom and beauty in our hearts.
