Week 63

The monochromatic tones surrounding the deer we startled made me a little anxious. A large, vivid palette has been commonplace for us. Limiting our palette is actually very restful and we were excited to try some experimental techniques with this piece. Whenever we try something new, it is especially bonding. There is the excitement of exploration and possibilities, the vulnerability of the unknown and the freedom that no expectations brings.

I love how it progressed. A great portion was done with velatura, thin paint to let the warm wood help create the vegetative layers. The whispy white flowers seemed to float in the sea of grasses and brush. It felt so peaceful to work on this pastoral scene. Even meditative. When it was completed, I felt like the deer, not so much startled because we rounded the bend but confidently watchful and ready for more.
