I looked up at him through splayed fingers. I did not know how to not let my internal dialogue show. I did not want to paint. Not when we had only a few hours with the kids at Grandma’s. It was my birthday and I thought our special day out would include something very different than the outline of our life as usual. His eager eyes met mine encouraging. Finally giving into the sumptuous paints before us, I shed those negative thoughts that nipped at the back of my neck, becoming more free with each stroke.

Within the hour a new piece flourished, more colorful and delightful than I could have ever known. It showcased the graceful slope of our backyard, where the young trees lean over the creek to talk. They seem to be reflecting the ease of just being.

Looking over my shoulder, I see Laert smile at me and gently reach for my hand. As the warmth of his hand enfolds mine, I realize we are the trees: growing, waving, struggling, talking and as time passes, hopefully embodying the grace and ease of just being.
