Week 89

Doing what we do is not without very humbling moments. Laert and I were looking for the next great photo turned painting opportunity while our family was touring the oldest Spanish fortress in Florida, complete with ancient embellished cannons and costumed actor teachers. We enjoyed each of the re-enactments and conversing with the historical attendants.

There was a gentleman, away from the steaming crowds of hot tourists, pausing at a table. His expression was deep in thought, his hands at peace at his chin. I may have startled him as I tried to discreetly take his photo. It’s interesting to me how automatic our expressions mold into a “face for photos”. His contorted upwards, straightening with his back into an obligatory smile. I was embarrassed he caught me, but then I requested he look ahead or down as before. I couldn’t quite get him in the same expression he had before when unaware, and he was trying so hard. Then I started to understand that he may not have two eyes. He couldn’t actually do what I asked. The heat rose on my neck and my embarrassment doubled. I thanked him again and tucked my phone into my pocket with my pride.

Laert asked when we started to paint this one if we should give him matching eyes. I responded that there is a sacredness of this moment that was housed in it’s imperfection. It offers a soul calming peace, one with an understanding that we cannot truly see a whole picture of this big world, and a knowing somewhere in our deep, there is goodness so big it will win in the end. I’d like to sit with him and let it envelop me also.
