Sometimes getting into the studio is so hard. “Why is it so hard to do what I love?“, my mind retorts. For me, when the sun goes down, it’s like I’m turned onto “low power mode” slowly moving to a standstill. When I get the kids down there is a few moments of elation, thinking I get to be a functioning adult for a bit before the weight of the countless bending over, constant live saving, pulling apart fights and cheese sticks boomerangs right back to have me begging for bed.

That was yesterday night, and most nights if I’m honest. Tonight, I steeled my will to be there. Once I’m in the place of creation, as I’m putting out paints, seeing each pigment gladly glide to my palette seems to fill me with a little of it’s chroma, it’s life and energy. The wafting odors of my craft buoy my lungs and despite my tiredness or baby induced aches I feel ready, no, itchy to begin.

This one is enormous. We’ve done some large ones but only 2 others this large. I’m obsessed with the jeweled leaves, shiny, luscious, not speaking but certainly not silent. The proud foliage spreads out each in topaz, emerald, garnet, sapphire and jade. A duchesses’ drawing room in the moonlight.
